A little while ago a group made
up of local organisations, including ACE IT and Edinburgh
Council’s City Centre Community Learning Plan circulated a paper
questionnaire to local older people in the Gorgie/Dalry area to
get their opinion and their concerns regarding issues such as
transport, local environment, safety in the home and community,
health & social care services, local learning opportunities and
facilities.
A meeting was held on Tuesday 10th October to set up a Gorgie Dalry
Older People’s Action Group to take some of these issues on - as
we know this is what YOU want!

A second open meeting was
held on Tuesday the 28th November at St Brides. One central aim
of the meeting was to develop ways of bringing the forum to the
attention of those aged over 50 within the area and encourage
them to participate in the group. A number of those attending
came forward to form a committee to oversee the progress of the
forum
G&D Older People's Forum Meeting:- 10th
October
Gorge
Dalry Older People's Action Group (OPAG) hosted the first of two
open meetings at St Brides Centre on Tuesday 10th October. The
aim was to discuss the formation of a new local 'Forum' charged
with providing a voice for the 50+ age group within Gorgie,
Dalry, Stenhouse and nearby areas. The initial meeting brought
together a small group of local residents, the area's MSP Sarah
Boyack, locally based organisations such as ACE IT and the
Edinburgh Silver Surfers alongside representatives of community
based learning within the city of Edinburgh.
The
meeting opened with a slideshow presentation by ACE IT outlining
the work of the older people's action group to date and the
various issues and concerns highlighted by those who
participated in the initial 'Have Your Say' survey.
The discussion which followed
focused on various local concerns raised by the survey such as
transport, street crime and the area's environment. Local MSP
Sarah Boyack and representatives of other community based
organisations used the points raised to outline the work of
similar forums across the city and the positive impact they had
achieved within their own communities. The meeting then went on
to address the detailed requirements of setting up the new
community led forum alongside various methods of 'getting the
word out' to local residents via press, media and a local
promotional campaign.
Continuing
their support for all aspects of the city's community,
Edinburgh's newest and brightest radio station - Talk107 also
attended the meeting. A selection of the group were interviewed
including a number of the Silver Surfers and Jenny Ridge of ACE
IT.
Following the meeting, Talk107 contacted ACE IT and have
arranged a live interview with several members of the group on
the Thursday morning edition of the Mike Graham Show - Click the
Talk107 logo to listen live online from 9am on Thursday 12th
October.
