We the Silver Surfers were to the fore as usual and enjoyed participating in
the wide range of activities on offer. Once again the day long event also
proved to be a great opportunity for catching up with old friends and
meeting new ones.
The Get Up +Go programme guide brings together all kinds of organisations
working to encourage the over 50’s to participate in various creative
activities and adult education courses. The initiative also includes many
services providing advice and assistance relating to health, wellbeing and
staying active in later life.

“I always look forward to the new brochure being released” Said
one visitor to the event. “There is always such a huge selection of
classes and activities. These days many old ones like me like to keep busy
and active and the programme is a real help to finding out what is going on
both in my own area and across the city”.
From Springwell Golden voices community choir to members of the Ageing
Well organisation - We were delighted to have the chance to chat with many
of the various groups and individuals we have worked with in the past or
have included in articles for our website. We greatly enjoyed the various
activities on offer including the Tai Chi class and the dancing with the
schoolchildren which brought the event to a close.

We also had an opportunity to wish Ruth McAlpine, (coordinator of the Get
Up +Go programme and an old friend of the Edinburgh Silver Surfers Web
Club), all the very best for her forthcoming retirement. Ruth’s hard work
and dedication to Get Up +Go has had a real positive impact on the success
of the programme over the years and she will be sorely missed by all
involved.
Later in the afternoon we joined the ACE IT team at their information stall
and spent some time sharing our experiences with a view to encouraging other
older people to make the best use of the internet and computers.
“The internet seems to be everywhere these days”. Said one visitor to
the ACE IT stall. “My grandchildren are always on to me about getting
connected and I really feel its time now to take the plunge”.
The event came to a close on a light-hearted note with a special
intergenerational tea dance involving primary 5 pupils from the Royal High
School. All in all a successful and inspirational day, greatly enjoyed by
everyone who attended!

“What a fantastic day” Said one visitor in closing. “I had only
meant to pop in for an hour but have been here all day. I had no idea there
was so much happening for older people in Edinburgh. I have taken extra
copies of the brochure for my friends and I am sure we will find activities
we can go to together. A brilliant idea – I’m all ready looking forward to
next year’s event!” |
