Anniversaries come and go
and how long do we remember any particular date? The memory of the very
first Armistice Day has come and gone but we are most likely to be still
thinking of the very recent 60th anniversaries of VE and VJ Days.
When we see film of the people who were part of the Second World War – they
are old! ...So how many family and friends took part in or have family
memories of the terrible carnage of the 1914-18 war. But better late than
never, the task of individuals compiling memories is now underway across the
country.
A little known fact is that there are now only about nine veterans from this
war still alive today. In way of tribute, the Edinburgh Silver Surfers are
recording their own memories. A really poignant family ‘souvenir’ from 1916
is a few pages torn from a notebook and written in pencil...
