On
the 17th March, twelve of us, Surfers, ex-students, volunteers and staff
from ACE IT made our way to the Queensberry House entrance to Parliament.
There, after a few minutes chat we all reported in and received our security
stickers. Local MSP Sarah Boyack (who originally suggested the visit at the
surfers Christmas party back in December) arrived and off we went on our
guided tour.We
agreed that most of us had come with pre-conceived ideas and maybe even a
wee bit of prejudice about cost, delays etc., etc. But we were soon all
being impressed by the inside of the building. The flooring was maybe the
first to be approved as it really was impressive. But some of us still
couldn’t take to the ‘raw concrete, on some of the walls and felt that
places could do with a lick of paint, even after being told that this finish
‘breathed’; it retained warmth or coolness where necessary. But this was one
of a very few criticisms in a general unqualified approval – of the inside!
Sarah
guided us round the buildings, we were in her office, in one of the
Committee Rooms and in the impressive Debating Chamber , in fact upstairs,
downstairs and in my lady’s chamber – almost literally.
Sarah was a super
guide and as she is a good friend to and supporter of the Surfers it was a
very relaxed afternoon. All our questions were answered right away and
frankly, including her views on men designing cupboards!

At the end of our tour, well
nearly, we had tea, coffee and mouth-watering shortbread. That was when we
finally sat down and discussed our visit, asked more questions, and all
agreed it had been a memorable afternoon.
Sarah Boyack said "I was
delighted to invite the Silver Surfers to see the Parliament and I was very
interested in their feedback. I am keen that as many people as possible come
and see both the building and the work that is carried out in it."
After the visit we had our
wee social occasion – across the road in Jenny Ha’s. One of the founder
members was celebrating a very important birthday - her Ninetieth - so she
was toasted and was given a card from the Surfers.

...A relaxing end to a very informative afternoon. |
