BBC's Scotland on Film visit to the
Surfers |
We
had another visit from a BBC Team on Wednesday, 15th March. This time they
were showing films connected with the Scotland on Film series currently
running on Sunday evenings.
The films were about peoples’ reminiscences from days past, forties,
fifties, sixties.
Men and women now retired spoke about things and people they remembered -
like ‘Big Tam’ running with the milk. Now better known as Sir Sean Connery!
The fun was fast and furious as one thought triggered off another. How many
people listened to ‘Dick Barton, Special Agent’ as teenagers. And his
sidekick, ‘Snowy’? Another memory was taking rags to ‘Asa Was’ in
Fountainbridge and spending the money we got on peas and vinegar in a nearby
shop. And there were the summer holidays spent at ‘Porty’ (Portobello) – no
foreign travel in those days.
While
the films were running a photographer moved about recording our own
reactions to what we were watching and we all had a great afternoon!
It really is a very interesting and exciting project and the BBC Team are
always on the lookout for film clips, snapshots. old postcards, anything
which helps document and keep the past alive. If anyone out there has bits
and pieces lying around which may be of interest, contact

Anita
Fitzsimons, producer of the website, said: ‘We had a great time showing the
material from Scotland on Film to the ACEIT audience. Showing clips of local
life in Edinburgh and listening to folks’ memories was really informative.
It was great to get true reflections of the ups and downs of life in the
past from people who lived through the times portrayed”.
