While we enjoy getting out and about meeting new people and compiling
material for our Surfers’ website – we also enjoy inviting folk to visit us
at the ACE IT computer training suite during our Tuesday web club.
This was the case recently when Mary and Jean paid us a visit for a cuppa
and a chat about the ‘Faith In Older People’ organisation based in Edinburgh
Founded
in 2005, Faith In Older people (FIOP) is a charity dedicated to enhancing
the quality of life and well being of older people across all aspects of our
society. The organisation works closely with those providing practical,
pastoral or spiritual care with the aim of increasing awareness of the
importance of spiritual care in the ageing process.
While the physical needs of older people are well known and catered for,
often the spiritual and emotional needs of older people are neglected
through lack of awareness and understanding.
There are many views on what constitutes ‘Spiritual Care’ but underlying
them all and central to the objectives of Faith In Older People is
“developing an understanding of what gives meaning to peoples’ lives.” For
some this may include religion but it also encompasses many different
factors including relationships with family and friends to love of music.
FIOP works with service providers, residential care homes, health care staff
and volunteers to educate, encourage and develop means of increasing the
well being of residents, patients and older people living in our
communities.
The organisation hosts a wide range of training courses, seminars and
conferences covering a wide range of topics related to the issues of
spirituality, well being and growing older which are becoming increasing
popular with health care professionals.
In addition, FIOP produce a wide range of tailor-made training material
covering a wide range of subjects and also produce an excellent quarterly
newsletter which is available in both print or as a downloadable document by
